The Best Beer Drinking Spots in Savannah

Before I even knew it or could drink it, I was a beer lover. Growing up in Vermont, one of the first facts you’re ever told is that there are more breweries per capita than any other state in U.S. When I began exploring breweries and different beers, I knew I was hooked. Moving to Austin, Texas in my early 20’s lead me to work at two iconic breweries where I obviously learned quite a lot about the art of brewing, saccharomyces, and fermentation, but I also learned that good vibes make that beer even better. Here are my favorite places in Savannah to enjoy a beer…

  1. Crystal Beer Parlor

Nestled in a quiet neighborhood just outside of Downtown at the end of one of my favorite streets in Savannah, Tattnall Street, you will find Crystal Beer Parlor — an unassuming brick building that wraps around to a huge parking lot. Inside, you will find a celebration of Savannah food history and an extensive line of beers on draft and bottle/can options. Oh, and don’t miss the boutique next door, you’re welcome.

2. Black Rabbit

If you’re lucky, the black rabbit picture will retract and an old movie or the game will be on as you belly up to the curved, wooden bar for one of the best beers in the city. It’s not just the beer that makes Black Rabbit stand out, it’s the rotating sandwiches and super laid back staff that leave you feeling both full in your belly and soul — cute, right?

3. Six Pence Pub

They may not have a fryer because of the ridiculously old building it’s in, but Six Pence is the best place if you’re looking for a European beer. I haven’t seen too many places with Swithwick’s on tap, but I know I can get a cold one here whenever I want one. Their menu is great too if you’re in the mood for a no-fuss lunch or shephard’s pie.

4. Service Brewing

You thought I wasn’t going to add this iconic brewery to the list? Come on, Service Brewing is the best and their beer is legit. I tend to steer clear of their Savannah banana beer - a session beer brewed with bananas — but other than that I’m all in. Don’t miss their taproom events, either! You can find me there on Thursday’s sweating it out at Run Club before I grab a pint.

5. Starland Yard

If I’m outside and I’m drinking, I’m good. Starland Yard — located in the endlessly quirky Starland District — is home to not only great beers but also a full bar stocked with fun cocktails and slushies to get you through Georgia’s sticky summers. Doggos and children alike are welcome to frolick around and give their parents a break as long as their well behaved. Most notably? There’s some great food at Starland Yard including Savannah favorite Vittoria Pizzeria and newcomer Uncle June’s as well as rotating food trucks.

6. Late Air

Okay, this might be a hot take to add an organic wine drinking establishment here, but, hear me out, they serve $2 Miller High Life ponies and damn good food. That’s all you need to know.

7. Two Tides Brewing

Overlooking the sometimes chaotic and children-filled Starland Yard is Two Tides Brewing. Set in an old home, this unique brewery has many different rooms to explore in this historic renovation as you enjoy your beer. Don’t have time to make it to the brewery? Just about any restaurant or bar in Savannah serves Two Tides and it’s definitely worth a try!
